Keeping up with website changes haunts everyone
Jan 13, 2025They say the devil is in the details right?
Everyone has a million tasks to complete when operating in the online business environment. And everyone can miss a step here or there.
Recently I had the incorrect YouTube Channel name on the home page of my website in an announcement bar at the top of the page. When I created my Findability FAQs video series on my new channel I put a link at the top of my home page as a special notice guiding users to the new channel.
A number of weeks after, I changed the channel name to align better with my overall marketing. I made the change on YouTube, in email footers, social media profiles and post text, and in the YouTube video descriptions themselves... I thought I had it covered. Yet I missed the announcement bar on my home page for many weeks after the change!
Reminding myself
Normally I have a reminder on my calendar every month or so to go through my website check list to avoid just this type of situation. But, of course the year was ending and in my ramp up for the new year I didn't have the reminder set up yet. Very embarrassing for sure.
I regret the error, I hope anyone that tried to visit my YouTube channel gave me grace and tried to find it via search on YouTube; However, I know how frustrating it is to click a link and get an error; I know how it can give a poor first impression to a visitor; I know we don't often get another chance to make a first impression....
Business owners are human
I am beginning this year with a digital reminder at the end of every month to check my website for sure. I have also put a sticky note on my monitor as a reminder just in case I miss the digital one. I am also beginning the year with the humble reminder that I can miss details just like everyone else. Even though we aim to get it right, sometimes we need a mistake to remind us how to recover if we don't.
